HOW DO I ACCESS ALL THE VIDEOS?

The log-in details you have currently allow you to view the videos which I've made available to the wider public, to whet your appetite for more unavailable videos.

The aim here is to encourage more people to contribute (at least) one of their own old videos to the collection, to encourage that you can only have access to the full catalogue if you donate a video.

Have a look at the rest of the FAQ for details on how you can convert and upload a video, check the list on the main members page to make sure it's not going to be duplicating one already available.

If you have created a video yourself and can upload it in the same way as a DivX or Xvid file this will also get you full access, as long as you don't mind everyone else who uploads one being able to download it.

WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?

To provide a digital backup of as many old, otherwise unavailable bodyboarding VHS tapes as possible, I was sorting through my old tapes and realised that these classics would eventually be lost to civilisation, they would be mere memories of a forgotten past when ARS's were state of the art and not everyone crossed there legs when they did a spin, a happier time when you could do a rollo at pipe and claim it without fear of ridicule.

With the re-releases of some of the early videos, Bodyboarding Enough Said, The Inside, and Tom Boyles Bodyboarding video magazine series, there seems to be an audience for the older videos, some of them might not have the cultural significance of the Inside perhaps, but if Steve McKenzie's description of what gets him stoked doesn't bring a tear to your eye I don't know what will.

I am not making any profit from this, and all I hope to gain is a few more videos which I haven't seen and wouldn't otherwise be able to.

WHY IS IT ONLY OLD VIDEOS?

This is a resource for watching videos which are unavailable anywhere else, if a video has been released as a DVD then there is a digital copy of it available, it's part of the record, there will always be someone with a perfect copy of that video, the aim here is to collect as many of the forgotten VHS videos which would otherwise be lost eventually to wear and tear or just thrown out.

The criteria for a video appearing here are simple:

HOW DO I DOWNLOAD THE VIDEOS?

Just follow the link on the members page which will bring you to another link, which you click on to download, because these are big files I'd recommend using a download manager, I use a free download manager and the free Orbit software with my Firefox browser, but there's hundreds to choose from, just google.

Because these files are all pretty big, and I'm not making any money on this, I'm using a free hosting site to store the files, the files are deleted after 3 months with no downloads, but if any of the links are dead, e-mail me and I'll re-upload them.

HOW DO I PLAY BACK THE VIDEOS?

On your PC in a media player, I've tested them in the latest Windows Media Player and in the excellent VLC media player, you'll need the relevent codec, which will be either Xvid or DivX, it will probably prompt you to download the codec if you don't have it when you open the file.

You may have a DVD player which can play back these files on your TV, I've tested them with my modified X-Box console and they all work fine on my TV, some of them are converted from NTSC (American TV standard) sources but your DVD player should be able to handle them, and your PC definitely will.

If you want to watch them in a standard DVD player you'll need to convert them to MPEG2 using software, try videohelp.com AVI to DVD for guides.

WHERE CAN I GET MORE RECENT VIDEOS?

At your local bodyboard friendly surf-shop, try BBHQ in Portreath in the UK, or ThreeSixtys Orca Shop, or ebodyboarding.com in the US, or about a million places in Australia.

If you'd like to buy the critically acclaimed 8 Balls DVD, you can visit the buy stuff page on this very site, where you can also pick up the cult classic Ready Steady Kook DVD for only £12.99.

I WOULD LIKE ONE OF THE VIDEOS REMOVED, WHAT DO I DO?

Just send me an e-mail with the name of the video you'd like taken down to garthwembury@hotmail.com.

If you hear of any of the videos being released on DVD I'd be gratefull if you e-mail me with that info too.

WHY IS THERE A PASSWORD?

To keep it exclusive, the point of this site is not to distribute as widely as possible, it's to create a resource for people who enjoy watching these old videos. Depending on the popularity of the site I might open it up to a wider audience if I feel it will end up in more videos being made available.

Please don't share the links with other sites or post them all over the place, I'll probably take down the video's if that happens, to get as many videos as possible it needs to remain exclusive.

HOW DO I CONVERT MY OLD VHS TAPES?

First you need to get them into a digital format, the easiest way is to use a DVD recorder, I've used a Panasonic one with a VHS deck and a DVD recorder which made it really simple, just look at your instruction manual if you've got one of these.

Once it's on a DVD you can rip it with DVD decrypter or similar program, then use AutoGK to convert it to a 233MB (approx) Xvid or DivX file.

If you haven't got one of them you can do it through your PC, the best way I've found is to capture on the PC in MPEG2 format, then convert to Xvid or Divx afterwards, I've used a cheap TV card with the bundled capture software and AutoGK to convert the MPEG2 file as above.

For loads of tutorials on how to do this try: videohelp.com

HOW DO I UPLOAD A VIDEO?

After you've got a DivX or Xvid file of around the 233MB mark (this size should give good enough quality from a VHS rip, but it's just a guideline) you can upload it to one of many free upload sites.

I've tested out a few different sites like this but ended up using Megaupload.com which allows you up to upload files up to 250MB fairly reliably.

If you've uploaded an old video and would like it added to the catalogue (this is the only way to get access to the full members area), just send me an e-mail and I'll create some log-in details for you.

DISCLAIMER

You must own a copy of the VHS tape these were ripped from or else you'll be infringing copyright, these are provided as digital backups of the old and probably knackered VHS tapes you've already got. I don't claim to have created any of these videos myself (except if I did), and they will be completely removed if anyone wants me to or if I hear they're getting re-released as a DVD.

Also, people spreading the links to the dowloads to other sites will have access withdrawn and I'll delete the file in question and re-upload it for members who are willing to keep it exclusive.
